NYC Girl Gone Jungle

After many years of urban food garden facilitation in NYC and Brooklyn, I have moved to be closer to nature in Costa Rica. I’m living on the land at Puerta a la Vida and it’s Pura Vida. Lush, vibrant, and full of earth Qi. Today we had our first meeting discussing the future of the growing operations and I can’t wait to share more.

Seed Bombing

Seed bombing BK today. What is that you ask? I’m dropping seeds in vacant lots. Why? Why not?! I’m dedicated to beautifying this urban jungle with my urban greenthumbs… And, as an urban gardener with some edge and spunk, it’s only natural for me to be drawn to the “guerilla” activities of seed bombing.

The concept of seed bombing was popularised in the 20th century by Masanobu Fukuoka. The essence of a seedbomb is a small ball of compacted compost stuffed with native seeds. After the seed bomb is created (see elements below), the seed ball/bomb can be thrown into nooks and crannies throughout the urban landscape.

My intention is to prettify the urban jungle and to trigger a more diverse habitat in vacant lots, construction sites and subway tracks.

To make your own seed bombs, create a ball of matter with the following elements:

* 5 tablespoons of seed compost
* 4 tablespoons of terracotta clay powder (holds the bomb together)
* 1 teaspoon of seeds, native to growing zone
* Sprinkles of water at intervals
* If Nitrogen/Phosphorus/Potassium (NPP) is absent in the compost, add liquid fertiliser
* 1 teaspoon of chilli powder or garlic powder as a pest deterrent (mites, aphids etc.)

Green Bronx Machine

Stephen Ritz is my new hero. Hats off and deep gratitude to the courageous grass-roots pioneers making a real difference in this city and beyond!!! His TEDxManhattan lecture highlights the fact that solutions are here in front of us. We do not need to travel far to make things right at home.

I’m deeply moved by his passion, gusto and compassion. Plus, he refers to the BX as “the borough that gave us baggy pants and funky fresh beats is becoming home to the organic ones”. This guy knows what’s up!!!

Terreform Proposes a Self-Sufficient NYC

Ever since I began the Lady Greenthumbs Garden Project, the urban landscape no longer looks crowded. Rooftops, vertical gardens, edible living walls and street-level gardens present a huge opportunity for our crowded city to get self-sufficient. I see NYC as a tremendous growing opportunity as we shift our resources and engage unused spaces!

Terreform proposes a plan that would bring the city to a self-sufficient state, while using Times Square as an energetic production hub.
